A Peppermint Pig for Christmas

Day 45.
A Peppermint Pig for Christmas

There's a delicious holiday tradition that people in my area look forward to every year...the breaking of the Peppermint Pig. This candy and this tradition started in upstate New York and involves a hard candy pig with a festive peppermint flavor. You are supposed to pass the pig around the dinner table and each person takes a turn tapping it with a small hammer and sharing a story of their good fortune in the past year with hopes of prosperity in the year to come. Then you share the delicious candy pieces. I got a tour of the Peppermint Pigs on display at a local shop that offers them for sale.

You can find out more about this tradition at www.saratogasweets.com/peppermint-pig-tale.cfm. I wish you plenty of good fortune and prosperity in the new year!
